Work Zone Crash Leaves 6 Dead in Maryland

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is investigating the accident

On Wednesday afternoon, a crash on Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland left 6 workers dead according to Maryland State Police. State troopers responded to a crash involving two vehicles and pedestrians at the inner loop of I-695 at Security Boulevard.

The investigation revealed that an Acura was trying to switch lanes, striking the front corner panel on the passenger side of a Volkswagen. The Acura lost control and entered the work zone traveling in between temporary dividing walls, striking multiple construction workers before overturning and coming to a stop. 

Emergency medical service personnel pronounced six people dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released but will be once next of kin is notified.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is investigating why this happened. Personnel from the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) State Highway Administration were at the scene assisting with detours and road closures.

After the crash, the Baltimore Beltway closed in both directions. The inner loop and outer loop of I-695 partially reopened between Security Boulevard and Windsor Mill Road.

Travelers in the area were asked to seek alternative routes around the area.

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski called the incident horrific.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who have lost their lives in today’s tragic crash,” he wrote in a tweet.
