Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey has awarded $50 million for the pavement of 217 miles of roadways statewide.
The funding will be distributed to 34 municipalities through the Municipal Pavement Program, with 18 communities receiving funds in Fiscal Year 2027 and 16 additional municipalities funded in Fiscal Year 2028, according to a release from the governor’s office.
The program supports the paving of municipally owned state roads, with a focus on roadways that are part of the National Highway System, the release states.
According to WWLP, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) allocates funding through the program annually and selects roadway segments based on pavement condition and geographic equity, prioritizing areas with the greatest need.
MassDOT works in coordination with the selected municipalities to develop the scope of work for each roadway segment, ensuring local conditions and community needs are considered throughout the planning process, according to WWLP.
Paving work is completed by MassDOT contractors in partnership with local municipalities, according to the news release.
