The new Mountain View Corridor connecting Salt Lake and Utah Counties has opened to the public after being completed four months ahead of schedule.
The four-mile stretch of roadway connects Herriman and Riverton to Saratoga Springs and Lehi through Bluffdale, according to KSL TV.
Mild winter weather allowed the crews to continue working throughout the season, contributing to the early completion of the project, KSL TV reported. Early access to land near the Utah National Guard’s Camp Williams also helped accelerate construction.
Improving east-west mobility
The project, also known as the 2100 North Freeway Project, and was launched to improve east-to-west traffic flow between Interstate 15 and Redwood Road in Lehi, according to KUTV.
Redwood Road is considered one of the most congested roadways in Utah County, behind I-15 and Pioneer Crossing. According to KUTV, the new corridor could reduce traffic on Redwood Road by up to 75 percent and help ease congestion on I-15.
The newly opened segment includes two lanes in each direction, improvements at two intersections, wildlife fencing, 12-foot-wide multi-use trail for cyclists and pedestrians and five pedestrian bridges, KSL TV reported.
Construction required crews to move 1.5 million tons of dirt and pave more than 350,000 square yards of concrete and asphalt, according to KUTV.
Officials plan for the Mountain View Corridor to eventually become a 35-mile highway extending from Interstate 80 in Salt Lake County to State Route 73 in Utah County, according to KSL TV.
The project launched in spring 2024 and was originally scheduled for completion in spring 2026, KUTV reported. The next phase is expected to begin in 2027, focusing on improvements between Porter Rockwell Boulevard in Herriman and Old Bingham Highway in West Jordan.
