The state plans to improve nearly 3,400 lane miles of pavement

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is set to improve nearly 3,400 lane miles of pavement in Fiscal Year 2026, which begins July 1. Backed by additional funding in Gov. Wes Moore’s budget, the agency will invest in patching, resurfacing and other pavement rehabilitation projects across the state.

The $143.2 million investment over the six-year capital program aims to enhance safety, improve ride quality and support Maryland’s economic growth.

The funding restores critical system preservation resources and unlocks federal dollars to support additional resurfacing, According to MDOT.

“Maintaining a reliable and smooth highway system is essential for our economy and the safety of all who use our roads,” the department said in a statement.

Key projects beginning this summer include improvements to:

  • MD 144 between Interstate 695 and the Baltimore/Howard County line.
  • MD 45 near Towson University in Baltimore County.
  • MD 210 near the Washington, D.C. line in Prince George’s County.
  • US 50/U.S. Route 13 on the Salisbury Bypass in Wicomico County.

New pavement markings and line striping will also be added to enhance safety for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.

The agency encourages the public to report potholes and reminds drivers to stay alert and watch for changing traffic patterns in work zones. A full list of projects is available on the MDOT SHA website at roads.maryland.gov.
