Crews with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) are working to repair a sinkhole on 10600 South in South Jordan, caused by a deteriorating drainage pipe. Westbound traffic is limited to one lane from Interstate 15 to 400 West, with additional daytime restrictions through 700 West.
The damage was traced to a 42-foot section of pipe compromised by rust and moisture, which can cause the ground to collapse. A similar sinkhole occurred nearby in August 2023.
“Safety is our top priority,” said Jake Brown, UDOT roadway operations manager, in a statement. “This is a priority for us to get fixed, due to the heavy rains coming.”
In Roy, another sinkhole shut down lanes on I-15 Friday, frustrating drivers. Both sinkholes were caused by leaking pipes that led to erosion beneath the roadway.
“There’s not always a way to detect issues under the surface before the damage appears,” said John Gleason, UDOT spokesperson, in a statement. “We don't want anybody driving into one of these.”
Temporary repairs are underway in Roy, with permanent fixes planned for later this summer. In both cases, UDOT will reinforce the damaged areas with new materials to improve long-term durability.
