Michigan Street Project Wraps Up Early

Construction made the area more accessible

Construction finished earlier than planned on the East Front Street Project in Traverse City, Mich. Officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday to open it to traffic. 

Construction on the project included rebuilding the road, adding more sidewalk access and a crosswalk at the corner of Grandview and Front Street to make downtown more accessible. Crews also replaced concrete curbs and gutters.

The city invested over $3 million to replace underground water and wastewater utilities. 

There will be occasional lane closures over the next few weeks for minor finishing work, including sign installation and signal work. 

The project was expected to be finished next month, but crews completed it last week.

“The last time this road was reconstructed was 1968. So, it’s time,” said Brad Wieferich, director at the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT)

The first phase of the $24.7 million project began in March.
