Road Construction Continues in Michigan

Drivers are asked to be patient as these projects progress

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has been busy with construction projects this summer. The most recent projects began this past weekend with 13 closures in total.

Stretches of Interstate 96, Interstate 75, and U.S. 131 were closed as crews worked to fix the roads.

MDOT is telling drivers to plan for potential traffic slowdowns this week as construction begins on Interstate 94 in Jackson County, U.S. 127 in Ingham County, and Interstate 275 in Wayne County.

Some of the projects include:

  • Interstate 94: The westbound right lane will be closed on Monday. It is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • M-58: Crews will be performing maintenance work on a small segment of M-58 between Bay street, Court Street, and N. Michigan Avenue.
  • Interstate 96: Crews will be performing maintenance work between Wright Road and Grange Road from 7 a.m. Monday, until approximately 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Bradley Wieferich, the director at MDOT, said the work is long overdue.

“We’re hearing from drivers saying they wanted the roads fixed, but not every road at the same time,” Wieferich said. "Like you, I and the other men and women at MDOT drive these roads and confront these same delays, but we're committed to improving infrastructure in the state of Michigan."

Huron County is working on a $5.2 million project that is being broken up into three sections. The first section begins at North Van Dyke Road to Nugent Road with rehabilitation work.

The second section is from Nugent Road to Tri-County Equipment where crews will be widening the road and extending the center turn lane.

The third and final section is east of Tri-County Equipment which will be resurfacing work.
