Multiple homes and a tree-cutting business on Main Street in East Peoria, Illinois, will be cleared to make way for construction of an on-ramp extension onto the Cedar Street Bridge.
The $15 million project is the first phase of a three-part, $48 million Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) project to accommodate more cars and pedestrians on and around the 92-year-old bridge, which carries Illinois Routes 116 and 8 over the Illinois River.
The Cedar Street Improvement Project is funded by the Rebuild Illinois capital program.
The work includes pavement patching, milling, resurfacing and bridge rehabilitation. The new lanes will extend down Main Street to Silver Street, separated by raised medians and a retaining wall on each side. There will also be a multi-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists on the north side that will go under the bridge overpass.
IDOT estimates this phase of the project will be finished in the fall. Phases two and three involve replacing the Cedar Street Bridge over Main Street and the Tazewell and Peoria railroad tracks.
Drivers should expect delays and allow extra travel time for trips through the area.
