Key Takeaways

  • New York State will invest $600 million in 180 paving projects next year, covering more than 2,100 lane miles.
  • Total investment in state roadway repaving will reach $1.2 billion, including 250 projects and 4,000 miles of road.
  • Funding comes from NYSDOT’s five-year capital plan, supporting a modern, safer, and more efficient transportation system.

New York State is undertaking the largest road paving project in its history, allocating $600 million to repave highways and local roads across the state.

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) will execute 180 paving projects in every region next year, covering more than 2,100 lane miles of road, according to a press release from the New York State Governor’s Office.

Building on Previous Investments

The funding builds upon earlier pavement improvement plans, bringing total spending to $1.2 billion to repave 4,000 miles of roadway by next year, with 250 projects statewide, Spectrum News 1 reported.

These projects are funded through NYSDOT’s five-year capital plan, which aims to create a “modern transportation system serving all New Yorkers.”

Historic Capital Funding Supports Roadway Modernization

In 2022, Governor Kathy Hochul successfully secured full funding for NYSDOT’s $34.3 billion 2022–2027 Capital Plan, the largest in the agency’s history.

The plan received an additional $800 million in the most recent state budget, improving the agency’s purchasing power to compensate for increased costs.

Governor Hochul emphasized that motorists should expect to see more paving crews on state roadways than ever before.
