The Ohio Department of Transportation is seeking public comment on Willoughby Hills bridge project

June 13, 2022
The project is slated to start in early 2024

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is proposing to replace the superstructure of the bridge on U.S. Route 6 (Chardon Road) over the Chagrin River in Willoughby. And now, ODOT is seeking comments from the public about the impacts of this project.

Partially located in Pleasant Valley Park, this project is to address the bridge structure and bring it up to current design standards. Construction is slated to begin in early 2024 and will take roughly 12 months to complete.

The official detour will utilize state Route 91 (SOM Center Road), Interstate 90, and state Route 306 (Chillicothe Road). The project also will require construction access through Pleasant Valley Park using the existing entrance and drive.

Accommodations will be made to maintain the existing access under Route 6 between the various parcels which comprise Pleasant Valley Park, the release stated. Access to the trail south of Route 6 will be restricted during construction activities.

Pleasant Valley Park is a recognized recreational property and is provided protection from adverse impacts associated with federal-aid transportation projects. ODOT consulted with Lake Metroparks regarding the project impacts and received concurrence that the project will not adversely affect the recreational activities, features, or attributes that qualify the property for protection, the release stated.

The public comments period runs through July 6.

Issues citizens may wish to comment on include, but are not limited to, the effect of the project on local residents, recreational resources, air quality, the local economy, floodplains, and historic or cultural resources, the release stated.
