Nevada DOT begins activation of ATM signs along Project Neon

Feb. 11, 2020

The Nevada DOT (NDOT) this week partially activated the Active Traffic Management (ATM) freeway signs in the Las Vegas valley.

Forty-two ATM signs were installed along north and southbound I-15 between Russell Road and Washington Avenue as well as along U.S. Highway 95 between Valley View and Las Vegas boulevards as part of the state's Project Neon.

As of this week, motorists will notice digital speed limit signs to the right side of the ATM truss structures, along with lit high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) signs to the left. Both signs are fully lawful and enforceable traffic controls. Should the signs go dark, the enforced speed limit reverts to the last posted static speed limit sign.

Once testing is complete, the full-color LED overhead signs will provide next-generation, real-time driver information about planned and unplanned incidents, speed limit changes, and lane use control, thereby improving safety and traffic flows by reducing differential travel speeds and the likelihood of secondary crashes for enhanced operational efficiency. The entire ATM sign network is anticipated to be fully operational by the end of the first quarter of 2020.

NDOT works with Waze to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but unscheduled construction changes, closures, and restrictions are possible due to weather or other factors.
