Michigan’s U.S. 23 Flex Route system to be unveiled this week

Nov. 14, 2017

The US 23 corridor bridges Washtenaw and Livingston counties

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is set to open up its U.S. 23 Flex Route system.

Flex Route is a lane-control system that employs cameras and electronic dynamic message signs to keep drivers abreast of morning and afternoon peak travel times and the availability of an additional lane during those crunch periods.

As part of a $92 million improvements project that is presently seeing road and bridge improvements between M-14 and Silver Lake Road, just north of the city of Ann Arbor, the Flex Route traffic management system will be rolled out on U.S. 23 between M-14 and M-36.

The new system is expected to effectively manage peak-hour congestion and improve safety along the corridor, as well as a reduce traffic incidents.

A similar system recently opened on Illinois’ I-90 corridor, west of Chicago.
