Biden meets with members of Congress to discuss infrastructure package

The discussion follows a meeting the administration held with senators last month

Yesterday, President Biden met with a bipartisan group from the House Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Committee to discuss investing in American infrastructure.

The discussion follows a meeting the administration held with senators on the Environment and Public Works Committee last month and is part of ongoing engagements on infrastructure with Members of Congress and stakeholders, the White House said.

President Biden was joined by Vice President Harris and Transportation Secretary Buttigieg in the meeting with T&I Committee members. The White House said the attendees of the meeting discussed a shared commitment to build modern and sustainable infrastructure in rural, suburban, and urban areas across the country.

"They also shared their commitment for ensuring new and existing infrastructure is modernized to withstand the impacts of climate change while creating jobs with the choice to join a union and leading the world in a clean energy revolution," the White House said in a statement. "Additionally, they emphasized the administration’s commitment to creating skilled-trades jobs across construction, manufacturing, and engineering sectors, fulfilling our obligation to working communities too often left behind, and positioning America to compete and win the 21st century."

According to the Associated Press, during last year’s campaign, Biden proposed $2 trillion in “accelerated” investments to shift to cleaner energy, build charging stations for electric vehicles, support public transit, and repair roads and bridges.

House T&I Committee Chair Peter DeFazio (D-Oregon) said the discussion on infrastructure is "a critically important conversation to have, and timely as I intend to move a surface transportation reauthorization bill through the Committee this spring. It is time to get out of the 1950s and move forward on a transformational infrastructure bill that puts millions of people to work building the infrastructure of the 21st century and beyond, all while putting our country on a path toward zero pollution.”
