Disability advocate sues city of Minneapolis for e-scooters blocking sidewalks

Oct. 21, 2019

An advocate for people with disabilities is suing the city of Minneapolis and two e-scooter companies over accessibility concerns caused by the presence of electric scooters on city sidewalks.

The plaintiff in the case, who reportedly has autism and a coordination disorder, alleges the scooters have made sidewalks inaccessible for people with disabilities after he tripped over a scooter at a light-rail station, which left a large bruise on his leg.

According to Minnesota Public Radio, the federal lawsuit also says that the scooters serve as an accessibility barrier for people who use wheelchairs. The claim is that the city and scooter companies are violating the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

According to a report from Route Fifty, the lawsuit was filed in federal district court in Minneapolis. It names the city of Minneapolis, Neutron Holdings Inc., which rents Lime Scooters, as well as Bird Rides Inc., which rents Bird scooters, as defendants.

Back in February, a group of southern California residents with disabilities filed a lawsuit against Bird and Lime along with seven cities in the region which allege ADA violations as a result of e-scooters' presence.
