U.S. military-style vehicles will cross over the Blue Water Bridge in the eastern part of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula this coming September and October as part of autonomous-vehicle testing.
The U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) signed an agreement today at the Mackinac Policy Conference with the Michigan Department of Transportation to test self-driving technology along the I-69 corridor and into Ontario via the bridge between Port Huron and Sarnia.
The testing will include evaluation of automated braking and throttle control plus limited automated steering control. The tests will involve platooning a line of vehicles in which the lead vehicle is manually controlled and the following vehicles are taking directions from the leader.
The goal is to save lives through safer technology, according to statements from U.S. senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters.
