Question: The Golden Gate Bridge is famous for its striking "International Orange" color. However, this iconic look was never actually part of the original design plan. What did the U.S. Navy initially want the bridge to be painted?

Answer: Bright yellow and black stripes, to ensure it was highly visible to military ships navigating through the thick San Francisco fog.

The U.S. War Department initially opposed the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, due to fears that Navy ships could be trapped in the San Francisco Bay if the bridge collapsed. The Navy requested the bridge painted in black and yellow stripes, while the Army Air Corps suggested a candy-cane combination of red and white stripes.
