Question: In honor of Presidents’ Day, we’re looking at the world’s busiest motor vehicle bridge: the George Washington Bridge. When it opened in 1931, it was a marvel of modern engineering, but it was originally designed to look very different. What was the original plan for its two massive 604-foot towers?

Answer: They were supposed to be encased in granite and concrete.

The George Washington Bridge's iconic exposed steel towers were actually not in the original design. Initially, they were planned to be encased in granite and concrete, but due to cost-cutting measures during the Great Depression led the team to postpone their encasement.

Eventually, the exposed steel towers earned widespread acceptance and was even said to be the most beautiful bridge in the world.
