Question: How long is the U.S. Interstate Highway System?

Answer: Over 48,000 miles

The U.S. Interstate Highway System is 48,890 miles as of 2022. It spans across the contiguous United States and has additional routes in Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico.

The road network is a vital resource for the entire country, delivering goods and connecting communities. It is regarded by some as the greatest public works project in history.

The U.S. interstate system we know today was created in 1956 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Federal Aid Highway Act. It continues to grow and improve, with new highways still being built and planned.

As of 2022, around a quarter of all miles driven in the U.S. used the Interstate Highway System.
