First day of closures around Spaghetti Bowl run smoothly

When you are under a Car-nado warning, you find the nearest safe haven.

For Las Vegas commuters, that safe haven came in the form of alternative routes as construction began on the infamous Spaghetti Bowl, the interchange connecting I-15 and U.S. Rte. 95. The $1 billion Project Neon will widen the route by one lane. No major traffic issues were reported along the project site, which will be active until the end of February.

“The closures went smoothly with our contractor, executing shutdowns effectively and timely,” said Nevada DOT spokesman Tony Illia. “Everything seemingly occurred as planned.”

Crews shut down I-15 southbound and northbound ramps connecting northbound U.S. Highway 95, and the I-15 ramps to Martin Luther King Blvd. Additional closings are planned this weekend.

NDOT and Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada officials are now monitoring 70 traffic signals on eight major roadways that will be impacted the most during the Spaghetti Bowl work.
