ROADS/BRIDGES: Unique conveyor bridge eases tension on Utah’s I-15

Span carries concrete directly to the work site

The Point Project in Utah is getting bonus points from drivers.

In an effort to reduce delays on the 7-mile project, and increase operations efficiency for the contractor, a 100-ft-long conveyor belt bridge has been built over I-15. The temporary span carries concrete from the batch plant directly into the work zone.

“We are eliminating 15,000 trucks,” Tim Rose, project director for the Utah Department of Transportation, said. “Instead of taking 15 to 20 minutes to get a truck to the work site, we’re getting there in a few minutes.”

The Point Project is expanding a 7-mile portion of I-15 between northern Utah County and Draper to six lanes in each direction from S.R. 92 to 12300 South. Old pavement is being replaced with concrete, the 14600 South interchange in Bluffdale is being reconstructed and the existing traffic-management system is being upgraded.

The conveyor bridge has been used in Utah before, but this is the first time it has spanned over an active freeway.
