ROADS/BRIDGES: Caltrans prepares for Presidio Parkway debut

Shifting of traffic, however, could make congestion unbearable for 79 hours
The Golden Gate Bridge will not be the golden ticket when it comes to traffic movement this weekend.
Crews will be shutting down Doyle Drive, part of Highway 101, to prep for the shift over to the new Presidio Parkway. The Parkway, a $1.1 billion job, consists of four tunnels and restored connections to Highway 1 and Park Presidio Boulevard. The transition is expected to make traffic a nightmare on Highway 1, especially during Friday’s evening commute, and motorists are being told to avoid the area all together.
Doyle Drive will be closed for 79 hours, and will reopen July 13 at 5 a.m. The ramp carrying northbound Highway 1 to southbound Highway 101 will take traffic for the first time since 2010.
“It’s a big milestone for drivers,” said Caltrans spokesperson Molly Graham.
When the Parkway opens, traffic leaving San Francisco will go through two tunnels that emerge onto a high viaduct above the Presidio before reaching the Golden Gate Bridge.
