The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) recently received $41.4 million in additional federal highway funding after successfully obligating the full amount of its federal funding during the 2013-2014 federal fiscal year. This marks the 14th consecutive year that the department obligated its yearly fiscal allowance.
Projects that will benefit from the new cash include structural repairs and replacement of the deck on the La. 511 Jimmie Davis Bridge in Bossier Parish, patchwork on the bridge deck of the elevated portion of I-10 in St. Charles and St. John the Baptist parishes and I-610 in Orleans Parish, and construction of a new roadway near the Cleveland Avenue Railroad Crossing in St. Tammany Parish.
Additionally, this federal booster shot comes just as the DOTD, which performs more than 8,100 inspections per annum, is set to increase its incorporation of new inspection technologies, such as amphibious vehicles, infrared thermography and non-destructive deck testing—more on which can be read in the coming issue of Roads & Bridges.
