A pedestrian bridge has collapsed in Detroit, killing one.
It happened on the morning of Sept. 26, when a waste hauler truck apparently struck the Cathedral Street overpass, which spans I-96. Witnesses saw the driver of the truck exit his vehicle before collapsing in the grassy median. He was later pronounced dead. The entire structure spilled onto the freeway, and at press time the section of I-96 was still closed.
“We received a call at about 6 a.m. that some type of waste hauler had hit the pedestrian overpass with its boom up,” Michigan DOT spokesperson Diane Cross said. “It struck the overpass and knocked out the entire structure. No one was on the overpass or driving beneath it at the time.”
Cross said as soon as the Michigan State Police completed its investigation the damaged span would be cleared from the roadway. There was no indication as to when that would happen, and traffic could be seen backed up for miles on I-96.
