Following through on a provision in SAFETEA-LU, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is proposing to strengthen work-zone safety precautions with the addition of officers, traffic-control devices and other protection measures.
Comments on the proposal, which appeared in the Nov. 1 Federal Register, are due Jan. 2.
The proposal calls for spending funds for "uniformed law-enforcement officers, positive protective measures between workers and traffic, and installation and maintenance of temporary traffic-control devices during construction, utility and maintenance operations."
