The joint venture team of Weddle Bros. Construction Co. Inc. and Berns Construction Co. Inc. has recently begun work on the $28 million bridge and roadway modernization project at the interchange of I-465 and 56th Street at Shadeland Ave. on Indianapolis' northeast side.

This project is a continuation of improvements to this area begun in 2000 by the Indiana Department of Transportation. Weddle Bros. and Berns Construction performed that work as well, which was valued at $31.5 million.

Bloomington-based Weddle Bros. is responsible for the bridge portion of the project, concrete median barrier walls and mechanically stabilized earth wall work. Berns Construction, located in Indianapolis, is responsible for the roadway construction, which includes grade and drain work and concrete pavement.

The project, which is slated for completion in November, encompasses:

* Demolition and construction of twin bridges at 56th Street over I-465;

* Replacing two single bridges at northbound Shadeland Ave. over I-465 and northbound Shadeland over the northbound I-465 entrance ramp; and

* Reconstruction of the four cloverleaf exit ramps connecting 56th Street and I-465 and the collector-distributor lanes connecting I-465 to Shadeland Ave.
