Earth Tech Inc., a business unit of Tyco International Ltd., and a global provider of consulting, architectural, engineering and construction services, will be on board for the first phase of the Central Station at the Miami Intermodal Center (MIC).
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six recently awarded Earth Tech a $3 million, 15-month contract to plan, design and prepare construction documents for the facility, which will consolidate Tri-Rail and Amtrak passenger services under one roof. The design also will accommodate a potential Florida High Speed Rail terminus.
The Central Station, which is part of the MIC core project, features an elevated pedestrian concourse that links travelers to a ground transportation center where they can access intercity bus operations and taxi and private vehicle drop-off and pick-up areas. The station will also connect to a Metro Rail station; an airport Automated People Mover and the consolidated rental car center lobby. In addition, Earth Tech and its subconsultants will provide landscape, security, signage and roadway improvements design for the 27-acre site.
"Our experience working on the Miami Intermodal Center since the beginning of this project will be a great asset as we move into the execution phase," said Bill Webb, executive vice president of Earth Tech's Global Consulting and Engineering Division. "Our team is looking forward to continuing our long-standing relationship with FDOT and to continue working on a project that will have a positive impact on transportation and mobility in the region."
Earth Tech's work on the MIC spans more than a decade, starting with the initial project development and environmental study in 1993. The company is currently serving as program manager for the public side of the project, which has been designated a "Project of National Significance" by the U.S. DOT. The center also was one of the first projects to receive financing under Transportation Infrastructure Funding Innovative Finance Act as part of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century.
