Iowa DOT website assists motorists with traffic information

The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is now using its website to assist motorists in learning about the state's new roadway safety features and designs.

To accompany improvements recently completed on U.S. 218 in Bremer and Black Hawk counties, the page www.iowadot.gov/acceleration.htm was created to give an easy-to-understand overview of acceleration and deceleration lanes. In the future, these roadway enhancements are planned for other areas of the state as well.

Several cities in Iowa have constructed unsignalized circular intersections referred to as roundabouts. With the first DOT-constructed roundabout in progress near Ottumwa, the state agency added a website, www.iowadot.gov/roundabouts.htm, with information on the benefits, frequently asked questions and other elements of these traffic-control facilities.

Earlier this month, the DOT placed information on the web about centerline rumble strips, which are being used for the first time in Iowa. Centerline rumble strips are being incorporated in a resurfacing project on U.S. 34 from Creston to Thayer in Union County. The page, www.iowadot.gov/rumble.htm, includes information about the use of centerline and shoulder rumble strips in Iowa.
