Matthew Garrett took office as the director of the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) on Dec. 19, while Interim Director Lorna Youngs resumed her position as administrator of Driver and Motor Vehicle Services.
Garrett has served in several positions within ODOT since 1997, including chief of staff for former Director Bruce Warner, and as the Region 1 manager, which included the Portland area, for more than two years. Garrett, 47, holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from George Washington University, and served on Sen. Mark O. Hatfield’s staff from 1993 to 1997. Garrett and wife, Laurie, live in Portland with their three daughters.
Gov. Ted Kulongoski said, “Matt Garrett is a proven leader who recognizes the important relationship between building a strong economy. This is a critical time for transportation in Oregon. The department is in the midst of the largest highway construction effort since the 1950s and is launching new projects throughout the state.”
Kulongoski said Garrett’s transportation expertise is diverse and extensive. “I am confident that Oregon will be well served by his leadership and benefit from his commitment to make our communities more accessible for citizens and for commerce.
