A survey released by the National Association of Realtors and Smart Growth America reveals that more homebuyers are basing their purchase decisions on how long it will take them to commute to work, as well as alternate transportation amenities.

Of the 1,130 adults surveyed, 79% said a commuting time of 45 minutes or less was factored into their residence location. Among people who said they planned to buy a home in the next three years, 87% placed a short commute very high on their list of priorities.

NAR President Walt McDonald said members of his organization sell communities and neighborhoods as much as the homes in them. Recently, he said, the organization formed a transportation working group to develop and advocate policies. "This survey shows that most Americans prefer to live in walkable communities with shorter commutes, sidewalks and amenities close by," McDonald said.
