Californians to vote on diversion of transportation funds

Seventy percent of Californians voted in 2002 to dedicate sales tax revenues paid for motor fuels to transportation purposes in Proposition 42. However, the state of California has effectively diverted these funds, averaging $1.4 billion annually, to other general purposes each of the past four years due to a loophole.

The California transportation construction industry led by "California to Improve Traffic Now" and ARTBA-affiliated Engineering and Utility Contractors Association have collected more than 1.1 million signatures to amend the California constitution to protect these funds and ensure they are dedicated to transportation purposes. The constitutional amendment will be on the November ballot.
