Michigan bridges need immediate repair

Oct. 15, 2010

Nearly 100 bridges in Michigan, many of which cross over some of the state’s busiest highways and roads, need critical repairs immediately, reported WILX, the NBC affiliate in Lansing, Mich.

The annual report from MDOT listed 97 bridges that are either “structurally deficient” or “functionally obsolete,” meaning they either need repairs now or are outdated.

"It's a little scary," said Lansing resident Tiana Hawver. "It's something you don't want to be thinking about as you're driving over bridges we have in the area."

MDOT said it is working hard to keep up with repairs, but department spokesman Bill Shreck said a lack of funds is hindering the agency’s ability to do so. He said MDOT is currently facing a $320 milllion shortfall.
