Constance S. "Connie" Sorrell, the Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT's) Chief of System Operations, has been named to the Intelligent Transportation Society of America's Board of Directors.

She replaces VDOT Commissioner Philip Shucet, who resigned from the board earlier this year to concentrate on agency concerns.

At VDOT, Sorrell is responsible for creating new focus, direction and measurement for improving travel throughout Virginia. Her job includes alleviating congestion at traffic choke points, developing innovative ways to manage highway incidents, and employing Smart Travel and traveler information systems. She was instrumental in taking 511 Virginia statewide this year. Sorrell is also responsible for the agency's $1.3 billion maintenance operations.

From January to October 2004, Sorrell also served as the interim Hampton Roads District Administrator.

"Connie has proved her mettle over and over again," Shucet said. "She has really made a name for herself in Virginia and in the transportation industry nationwide. ITS Board members are generally CEOs, so Connie landing the spot says something about her reputation."
