Dr. Brian Smith, an assistant professor of civil engineering at the University of Virginia, has been recognized by the Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC) as the outstanding new faculty member in transportation in 2003.
The award, which was established in 2002 by CUTC and the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, is awarded annually to an outstanding educator or researcher in transportation who has not yet been granted tenure.
Dr. Smith was recognized for his achievements in transportation research, his record as a teacher and his contributions to professional engineering organizations.
Dr. Smith is nationally regarded as a leader in infrastructure management and information technology in civil engineering. As the university director of the Smart Travel Laboratory, he guides a $4.5 million annual research program focused on mitigating congestion and providing more reliable transportation services. To date, he has authored 35 papers in academic journals. Dr. Smith currently serves on three Transportation Research Board committees focusing on the application of information systems and technology to transportation operations. He also is a member of ARTBA's Research and Education Division.
