Virginia Transportation Commissioner Philip Shucet appointed Don Askew, P.E., as deputy commissioner to replace Claude Garver, P.E., who has retired.

Askew, a 39-year veteran of the Virginia Department of Transportation, was district administrator for Culpeper. He also served as acting assistant commissioner for operations from November 2001 to July 2002.

As deputy commissioner, Askew will bring experience and leadership from the field to VDOT's central office in Richmond. He will coordinate major transportation initiatives and represent the commissioner in his absence.

Shucet also appointed Jack Rollison as the special assistant to the commissioner. Rollison will report directly to the commissioner in the areas of urban congestion relief, federal reauthorization legislation and community outreach. He will assist VDOT in transitioning its urban construction program to the cities of Newport News, Hampton, Virginia Beach and Richmond.
