Arkansas executing largest highway project in state history

The state of Arkansas is about to embark on its largest road project in state history. A section of I-40, which holds the third-highest truck volume in the nation, will be widened from four to six lanes. Only sections of the Pennsylvania and Ohio turnpikes have more daily truck traffic than I-40 between Memphis and Little Rock.

According to the Associated Press, the work will bring lane closures and shifts on the highway as part of a $57 million construction project.

The widening will be between the I-430 interchange on Little Rock's west side and the interchange with I-30 to the east. The I-30 interchange carries 114,000 vehicles a day and is one of the busiest routes in the state.

The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department says work will close lanes in both directions through the end of the year. Lanes will be open to handle Fourth of July weekend traffic.
