Alabama’s largest DOT project to improve I-22

Archer Western Contractors of Atlanta will begin work for the largest highway construction project in Alabama history at the end of July, according to an Associated Press report.

According to Alabama Transportation Director Joe McInnes, Archer Western Contractors of Atlanta, a Georgia firm, submitted the lowest bid of $168.6 million, slightly below the second lowest bid of $171.3 million submitted by Brasfield and Gorie, a Birmingham company.

Construction to build the interchange connecting Corridor X with I-65 at Birmingham is expected to be completed by October 2014. Corridor X will become I-22 when construction is done and will provide a quicker route from Birmingham through northern Mississippi to Memphis, Tenn.
