The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on its economic stimulus package on Wednesday, Jan. 28. The current funding level for federal aid as it pertains to the road and bridge construction industry is $30 billion. State DOTs have 120 days to allocate the funds. Combined with the appropriations bill, which is expected to be passed in mid-February, road and bridge builders could be entitled to over $60 billion in FY 2009.

“The economic recovery plan announced by the U.S. House of Representatives leadership will provide an important first installment on the capital investment needed to fulfill President Obama’s pledge to repair and upgrade the nation’s aging highway and bridge network, transit systems and airports,” Pete Ruane, president and CEO of the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), said in a statement. “As [Obama] said, ‘This plan is a significant down payment on our most urgent challenges.’”

The industry now must urge local representatives to support the stimulus bill. For immediate action, call ARTBA’s Grass Roots Action Line toll-free at 888/448-2782. The action line will put contractors, engineers and state, city and county officials directly in touch with their local representative. A signed letter also may be submitted, and those interested are encouraged to put together a statement on company letterhead signed by all employees. Download a sample letter here.
