The spike in the price of road salt is spiking the interest of law enforcement agencies. The Illinois’ Attorney General’s office is looking into the higher price of road salt in some areas of the state, which has caused some public works agencies to reduce their purchases of the material.
The city of Moline has experienced a whopping 300% price increase for salt compared to last year, and general manager for municipal services Doug House said the city will not be buying much salt to melt snow and ice on roadways in 2008-09.
The Illinois Attorney General’s office said that it is too early to determine why salt prices have gone up significantly for some counties in Illinois and not others. The office also would not commit to any legal action.
