Leap is Cutting Edge

In 2004, Richard Holmes, president of Holmes & Murphy Inc., (H&M) Orchard Park, N.Y., described his purchase of a Terex | Cedarapids CR552 Remix paver as a “leap of faith.” He had seen Remix pavers at trade shows and new the concept was sound. But it wasn’t until he bought a Remix paver specifically for a $12 million project at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BNI) that he became a true believer.

The tough performance-based contract required minimum densities of 96% across the mat and 92% at the joints.

Adding to the difficulty, the large, 2-in. minus coarse aggregate used for the base mix had the potential to segregate. If non-uniform aggregate distribution and mat temperatures existed, it would have been nearly impossible to achieve spec densities.

However, the contractor’s Remix paver handled both material and thermal segregation. The hopper’s two sets of twin counter-rotating augers uniformly pulled and reblended asphalt from all areas of the hopper. Segregation never materialized at BNI.

The Remix paver helped H&M to achieve the contract’s tough standards.
