Transportation infrastructure devastated by Hurricane Katrina has prompted the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development to undertake its first design-build project ever and, as a result, HNTB, Kansas City, Mo., has won its first design-build assignment in the state. As a subconsultant to contractor Boh Bros., HNTB was selected to provide engineering design and plan detailing services in support of emergency repairs to the Interstate 10 twin bridges over Lake Pontchartrain.
The high-profile project involves repair of more than four miles of damaged bridges at an estimated cost of $31 million. The initial two phases of work, estimated at 45 and 120 days, respectively, will be 24/7 operations. A later third phase, involving daily bridge inspection, may span three years.
