A project to add new lanes on Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) in Maricopa County, Ariz, is now halfway complete, according to a news release from the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).
To address rising traffic volumes, crews are widening an 8-mile stretch of Loop 202 between the Loop 101 Price Freeway in Chandler and Val Vista Drive in Gilbert, KTAR News reported.
The $200 million project will build two new lanes in each direction between Loop 101 and Gilbert Road, and one new lane in each direction between Gilbert Road and Val Vista Drive, according to ADOT.
The Loop 202 Improvement Project will also include reconstructed ramps, new retaining walls and widened bridges to support added capacity. Additional upgrades include new lighting, signage, message boards, drainage systems and fiber-optic cable to power closed-circuit cameras and equipment that provide real-time traffic conditions and travel-time updates to the public, the agency said.
Full project completion is expected in spring 2027, and work was launched in August 2024, according to ADOT.
KTAR News reported that the project is being delivered in partnership with the Maricopa Association of Governments and funded through Proposition 400, a countywide half-cent sales that is allocated to transportation improvements.
