Grading work is progressing steadily on the Interstate 65 widening project in Calera, Ala., marking a significant milestone in the Alabama Department of Transportation’s (ALDOT) effort to enhance safety and traffic flow on one of central Alabama’s busiest corridors.
Crews are actively grading the interstate’s median to prepare for the addition of a new lane in each direction. This work, which continues to move northward, will support future pavement installation alongside a newly constructed concrete median barrier.
In addition to the grading operations, ALDOT is advancing plans to replace the aging I-65 bridges over the railroad in Calera.
The new structures will be wider and built to accommodate three lanes of traffic in each direction, addressing increasing traffic volumes and improving long-term roadway safety, according to ALDOT.
Once completed, the widening project is expected to relieve congestion for both daily commuters and commercial traffic, enhancing mobility along this economic route. The improvements are part of ALDOT’s broader initiative to modernize infrastructure and support regional growth across Shelby County.
Motorists are urged to remain alert for construction crews and shifting traffic patterns in the active work zone.
