The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is preparing to launch phase one of the U.S. 90 West Expansion Project on the city’s West Side, a $500 million effort aimed at easing congestion and improving mobility in one of the region’s busiest corridors.
Construction is slated to begin in late 2025, though an exact start date has not been announced.
Phase one will widen U.S. 90 from Loop 410 to Loop 1604 from four to six lanes and build a new flyover ramp connecting westbound U.S. 90 to northbound Loop 1604. This phase is fully funded and estimated to cost $161 million, with completion expected in 2029.
“This is a major investment in West San Antonio’s future,” a TxDOT spokesperson said in a statement. “Traffic on US 90 is projected to more than double over the next 20 years, from 70,000 to 150,000 vehicles per day.”
Phase two of the project will continue the six-lane expansion from Loop 1604 to State Highway 211.
That portion is expected to begin in 2028 and finish in 2032, at an estimated cost of $339 million. Funding for phase two is not yet complete.
All dates and costs remain subject to change.
