Sinkhole Develops on South Dakota Highway

May 3, 2024
Motorists urged to avoid this section of Interstate 90

A sinkhole developed on the north shoulder of the Interstate 90 business loop between Chamberlain and Oacoma, S.D. this week due to excessive rain.

The area is one mile east of exit 260.

The road is open to one-lane traffic only and the area is being controlled by stop signs.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) had plans to rehabilitate an 11-foot metal culvert in this area in 2025. This original project has been expedited with reconstruction work to be completed during the summer and fall months of 2024.

Drivers are encouraged to use exits 260 and 263 to avoid the one-lane traffic in this area.
