I-64 Construction Project Moves to Final Phase

West Virginia is improving traffic congestion on Interstate 64 in Cabell County, and according to the West Virginia Division of Highways, the project is entering the final phase of construction.

Last week, contractors shifted westbound traffic on I-64 between East Mall Road in Barboursville and the Merritts Creek interchange.

The next change will be shifting eastbound traffic from its current location into the center lanes by using a contraflow lane, according to Rob Pennington, District 2 district engineer. This will move the I-64 project into its last major traffic phase so crews can begin demolition and rebuilding the five bridges and three miles of interstate.

The traffic flow change is expected to happen this week.

Since construction on this section of I-64 has begun, the center/median has been widened and used for maintaining traffic and bridges in the construction zone have been partially replaced.

"We continue to request the traveling public to obey the posted speed limits through the work zones to ensure their safety and the safety of our workers," Pennington said in an email. "The completed projects will include additional lanes of I-64 and improve the overall mobility through the corridor. After these two projects are completed, the newly widened section of I-64 will connect to the existing I-64 six lane section between the Hal Greer Boulevard and 29th Street Interchanges providing improvements to both local and regional traffic. The projects will include the replacement of seven bridges and the construction of new pavement. This should minimize the need for any significant future maintenance and subsequent impacts to the traveling public."

Construction is expected to finish in November 2024.
