Indiana's North Split Project on Interstate 65 and 70 is nearing completion with the final ramp (Ohio Street to College Avenue) having been opened May 26. The reopening of the ramp represents a significant milestone in the construction of the interchange.
The I-65/I-70 North Split Interchange project aims to enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and accommodate future growth in the region.
“The substantial completion of the North Split project proves how a committed team, when aligned, can achieve a nearly impossible feat,” said Superior Construction CEO Nick Largura. “I’m grateful to all of the Superior team members and partners who worked alongside us to deliver this critical transportation hub for the people of Indianapolis, and I look forward to watching it connect this region for generations to come.”
The project has been a collaborative effort between the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), Superior Construction, and the design partner, Janssen & Spaans Engineering, Inc. (JSE).
Originally opened in 1976, this project is the first endeavor to reconstruct the North Split.
INDOT wanted to improve public safety by eliminating the interstate’s original weave patterns. According to the agency, frequent merges, weaves, and lane changes over short distances have led to many crashes in the North Split project area, including more than 1,600 recorded crashes from 2012 to 2016.
The $399.5 million project modernized the original design of the North Split, allowing more efficient traffic flow and reducing travel time for motorists.
The project began in February 2021, and since the final ramp opened, crews are now focusing on aesthetic improvements, including painting, landscaping, and lighting. The team will also add bridge monuments, resurface local streets and sidewalks, and construct sound walls at the northeast corner of the interchange.
