Arkansas Awards Over $20M for Alternative Transportation Projects
Key Takeaways
- The Arkansas Department of Transportation award more than $20 million for 67 alternative transportation projects across the state.
- Eligible work includes on- and off-road infrastructure.
- Local governments, schools and state agencies were awarded.
The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) announced the recipients of its 2025 alternative transportation funding awards, totaling over $20 million.
The grants support almost 70 projects that improve multimodal transportation and infrastructure across the state. They are supported by two ARDOT programs that provide an 80% share of federal funds for a 20% local participant match.
Arkansas’ Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) supports projects defined as “transportation alternatives” for pedestrians, cyclists and other non-motorized forms of travel.
Eligible work incorporates on- and off-road resources including sidewalks, bicycle infrastructure, pedestrian and cyclist signals, lighting and other safety-related infrastructure. Converting abandoned railroad corridors for pedestrian and bike trails is also allowed.
In 2025, 60 TAP projects were awarded approximately $18.9 million. Recipients include cities, counties, K-12 school and districts, universities and state entities like the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and the Arkansas Department of Parks.
The grants support an Arkansas State University campus loop trail, sidewalk improvements in Texarkana, War Eagle Creek campsites and more. A full list of this year’s TAP projects can be found here.
ARDOT also awarded seven projects $1.8 million from its Recreational Trails Program. This fund is set aside specifically for recreational trails. Eligible work includes maintenance and restoration of existing trails, development and rehabilitation of trail facilities and linkages, and the creation of new trails.
