Kansas Awards $25 Million for Local Roadway Improvements
Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly announced Tuesday that $25 million has been awarded for 30 road and intersection improvement projects across Kansas through the state’s City Connecting Link Improvement Program.
The funds will support work on portions of state highways that run through municipalities for the 2027 and 2028 fiscal years. Administered by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), the program helps cities preserve, restore or enhance critical stretches of road that contribute to statewide connectivity.
“Enhancing the safety and accessibility of our local highways is made possible by grants through this essential program,” Kelly said in a statement.
Projects were selected across six regions, with funding distributed among surface preservation, pavement restoration and geometric improvement categories. Surface preservation efforts may include overlays or joint repairs, with up to $400,000 in funding per project.
Pavement restoration and geometric improvement projects — which often involve full-depth repair or safety upgrades such as turn lanes — can receive up to $1.5 million each.
Cities with populations over 2,500 must provide matching funds, while those with more than 100,000 residents are required to contribute at least 25%. With local matches included, the total value of the projects exceeds $39 million.
Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed emphasized the importance of the state-local partnership in a statement.
“Through this vital collaboration, we’re addressing transportation needs while promoting economic growth and safety across Kansas.”
The full list of projects and award amounts is available through KDOT.
