The funding supports transportation alternatives across the state

The Ohio Department of Transportation announced almost $52 million in grants to be awarded over the next four years to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists throughout the state.

The funding will support 44 projects across 33 counties and is part of Ohio’s Transportation Alternative Program. Recommended works include sidewalk replacements, bikeway repairs, crosswalk enhancements and accessibility ramp additions. A full list can be found here.

"The Transportation Alternatives Program makes vital investments to support safer, more connected spaces for walking and biking,” Gov. Mike DeWine said in a news release. “This program helps improve quality of life, enhance public safety, and build sustainable transportation networks that make our cities and towns stronger and more vibrant."

The program funds projects defined as transportation alternatives, including on- and off-road pedestrian and bicycle facilities, improved access to public transportation, recreational trails and routes to K-12 schools.

Projects are selected using committee recommendations and a scoring system that focuses on safety, connectivity and preservation. Funding was prioritized in areas of the state with high demand and need for walking and biking options. The grants were given to both short-term infrastructure projects that can be constructed quickly, as well as longer-term builds with statewide significance.

“Biking and walking are great modes of transportation that are not only fun, but foster connections, support local economies, and contribute to a healthier lifestyle,” Ohio DOT Director Pamela Boratyn said in the news release. “We are proud to do our part to support active transportation in Ohio.”
