The Georgia Department of Transportation announced awards for three improvement projects under the Transportation Investment Act (TIA). The awarding of these projects signifies the major push the TIA Program and Georgia DOT are making towards letting all Band 1 projects.
TIA is a $1.6 billion investment that provides additional funds for local governments to provide much needed rehabilitation and repairs to transportation infrastructure in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA), Heart of Georgia Atlamaha (HOGA) and River Valley regions of Georgia.
The awards announced, totaling nearly $10 million, will improve the Sparta, Americus, and Gibson areas of Georgia. The award of $8.5 million was made to Reeves Construction Company of Macon, GA for reconstruction of 5.16 miles on South Georgia Tech Parkway beginning at U.S. 19/S.R. 3 and extending to S.R. 49 just outside of Americus. This project will provide operational improvements for Georgia citizens by alleviating truck traffic through downtown Americus while also adding pedestrian facilities around South Georgia Technical College. The project will also construct a roundabout at S.R. 49 and the South Georgia Tech Parkway intersection.
A $449,212 award was given to Southern Asphalt, LLC of Evans, Ga., for the 0.242 mile paving and construction on J.W. Braswell Road beginning at Beall Springs Road and extending to School Circle Drive in Gibson. This project will benefit the public by relieving congestion caused by vehicles turning into Glascock County High School. This will also increase access to the school by providing an additional entry location.
The final award of $791,999 was given to Matriarch Construction Company of Tyrone, Ga., for safety and drainage improvements to 0.477 mile of Ghettis Street beginning at S.R. 15 and extending to S.R. 16 in Sparta. The project will eliminate existing drainage issues on Ghettis Street and provide enhanced pedestrian facilities as well as resurfacing and striping.
